| Thames Basin and Wealden Heathlands Breeding Bird Survey |
|
Last updated in June 2007 The Thames Basin and Wealden Heath Important Bird Areas (IBA's) hold internationally important populations of three species listed on Annexe 1 of the EU Bird Directive. They are Nightjar, Woodlark and Dartford Warbler. The Heaths of West Sussex form an important part of this rare and fragmented habitat. The SOS together with the RSPB, Hampshire, Surrey and Berkshire Bird Societies are undertaking an ongoing survey. The purpose is to monitor the above three species plus others of conservation concern such as Tree Pipit and Stonechat. These five species are our main quarry but the census form provided enables the individual to monitor further species such as Turtle Dove, Redstart, and other typical heathland birds. The work undertaken will not only further our understanding of the dynamics of these heathland populations but also provide the data required to ensure that the Wealden Heathlands are part of the proposed Special Protection Area. How can you help? The Society is in need of reliable volunteers to help with this work. The Survey starts in mid February, (to find the Woodlarks taking up their territories) and carries on until late June. We try to cover the individual sites entirely on four occasions, including one early visit as mentioned, and two visits (more if you have the inclination and the time), about two weeks apart during May when song activity is at its peak. There will be at least one evening visit in May or June to count Nightjar. With the data collected we are able to estimate the total number of breeding pairs/territorial males of each species. The WHBBS surveyors have contributed to the recent Nightjar (2004), Wood Lark and Dartford Warbler (2006) and those county results will be found in the relevant year Sussex Bird Reports. The yearly results of the survey are also produced annually in the Report The heathlands we cover are as follows and those in need of surveyors have an asterisk beside them.
There are plenty of opportunities, and some of the areas are very undemanding, if you have limited time. Please contact us if you are interested in helping in this fascinating habitat. For more information about this survey contact Alan Perry at
