dFH: recorded on average in one year in three or four up to 1937, but annual from 1945 to 1961 except 1947 and 1956. Large numbers recorded in 19th Century e.g. 250 in 1866 after heavy gales. All records from 17 August to February.Most in September and October, but 3 January, 2 February, 2 August (earliest 17th, 1844) and 8 December.
1948-59Annual totals 6, 3, 16, 5, 3, 1, 5, 5, 0, 10, 2 and 13 (total 69). Records include one at Midrips on 26 August 1948, five west at Langney Point (ES) on 27 October 1948 and one at Darwell (ES) on 18 and 19 September 1957.
1960-69Annual totals 60, 8, 0, 3, 2, 2, 0, 3, 2 and 2 (total 72). 8 September, 40 October, 22 November and 2 December, including one at Weir Wood Reservoir (E/WS) on 18 September 1960, ten off Selsey Bill (WS) on 8 October 1960 andone at Glynde Levels (ES) on 3 November 1967.

A rather weak looking juv on Adur saltings (WS) by the Norfolk Bridge on 2 October sadly flew low across the A259 once too often and, almost unbelievably, was found in the radiator grill of the Bird Report Editor's car after he had unsuccessfully driven over to see it.*
