| Sighting Description |
After a quiet day yesterday with just 22 auks, things picked up again today. There were several parties of 100+ gulls (mainly Herring Gulls) feeding about 2km offshore this morning. According to the owner of a charter fishingboat there are still some shoals of sprats in the area and also some herrings are beginning to appear. Apart from the gulls, the shoals attracted a fair number of Cormorants. These arrived from the east in groups of up to eight birds. After feeding for a while the Cormorants continued westwards (again in small groups) with an overall total of 82. The auks followed the same pattern and I counted 160W between 08.00 & 09.00 and a further 80W between 09.30 & 10.00. All this activity attracted the attention of a Great Skua which caused a major panic as it move westwards at 09.50. (David H Howey) |
