| Sighting Description |
At 17.00 this evening I was sitting at my drawingboard 'painting' when I noticed some warblers flitting through the boundary hedges in my Birdham garden. Getting the bins out I watched as the Chiffs sallied through the midge swarms when my interest was grabbed by a drab finch-like bird that dropped onto the grass from out of the bushes - a female COMMON ROSEFINCH!! The chubby bill and beady eye were immediatly obvious and as the rabbits suddenly got spooked and dashed around, she flew back into the bushes revealing the overall plainness of these birds, with no wing or tail markings - the feature that had initially grabbed my attention. She dropped back down to feed on the grass again for a couple of minutes until the rabbits (grrr...) spooked her again and she disappeared into the bushes for good. Earlier in the afternoon I'd been pretty chuffed at seeing my first Whitethroat of the year in the garden - sometimes I love working from home!! |
