| Sighting Description |
A rather quiet BGB but a nice addition to the survey was a male and female Blackcap on the fat ball feeders at the same time. This morning (1st Feb) both were back and, a short time after, I heard the male singing from fir tree in the garden. Presumably migrants but interestingly I had a winter pair last year with male singing in late winter. I'm now wondering whether a) they migrate in pairs and b) whether male Blackcaps commence a pre-nuptial breeding display prior to migration and c) whether Blackcaps have long-staying 'partners'? I've heard of other passerines singing prior to Spring migration but not come across any articles of Blackcaps doing this as a regular thing. Anyone know? |
