Sighting Description

Seven members of the Society joined Mike Welcome and Jim Weston for a 4 hour tour of the Pagham Spit and North Wall area. The weather was most accommodating unlike the birds. During the week hundreds of black-tailed godwits had fed and roosted on the North Fields. Today however only a small group of about 200 remained and they required long distance scoping. The Saturday singing Cetti's warblers had become mute. There was optimism about the sea watch as on Saturday in excess of 50 slavonian grebes and 120 red-breasted mergansers had been seen. Sod's law was in full force as almost all of the mergansers had moved on and there were only glimpses of a few long distance grebes on Sunday. Nevertheless the group remained enthusiastic and clocked up a total of 59 species. Goldeneye were seen on the Lagoon and in the Harbour. Mediterranean gulls were on the Lagoon and the sea. Nine species of duck were seen and 11 species of waders. Small parties of brent geese were forever on the move giving indications that they will soon be heading north. The mammal watchers were rewarded with a single roe deer and a common seal hauled up at Owl Point. (Jim Weston & Mike Welcome).
