| Sighting Description |
We did a crazy thing today and visited Hayling Island in Hants! Probably not the best day as the wind was very cutting making the inshore waters of the harbours extremely choppy keeping most of the birds out of our sight. A stunning Merlin sitting on the sea wall around the oysterbeds was a fine sight. We spent ages looking for the flock of Black-necked Grebes checking out many parts of the harbour without success. Off Sandy Point a Black-throated Diver was the only bird out in the channel between there and East Head. Back to West Sussex and proper birding. A female Marsh Harrier was patrolling the reeds on the Little Deeps at Thorney Island and causing havoc amongst the water birds. The dodgy duck which has been misidentified as a male Scaup was on show. Down the west side of the Deeps were 14 roosting Greenshank and a Spotted Redshank and the flock of Barnacle Geese which made a very good job of hiding from us in long damp grass (we counted 14). The Marsh Harrier flew over west heading for the Langstone/Emsworth area. (Bernie Forbes, Dave Smith & Dorian Mason). |
