29 Jan 2008 Shore Lark photo   more...
As I run a photography business called Shorelark Ltd, I had to get down to Rye Harbour to see the SHORE LARK and it duly gave superb views by the red-roofed hut. Image is attached here (click above). Also, ringtail Hen Harrier over back of Ternery Pool at 1pm

30 Jan 2008 Cattle Egret   more...
A CATTLE EGRET (presumably the bird previously seen by the Ouse at Rodmell) is currently favouring the area north of Piddinghoe Village where there are some horses and donkeys, viewable from east bank of the Ouse only. A male Black Redstart at the Portobello Sewage Works (Telscombe Cliffs) and two males at Friars' Bay (Peacehaven). A female/juvenile bird has also been seen regularly at Friars' Bay but the incoming tide restricted me from venturing too far. (Steven Munday).

29 Jan 2008 Unidentified bird of prey - escape?   more...
A large bird of prey seen in the early morning over the last two weeks walking about in a grass field at Slindon. Dark on the back, very light on the front. Eye stripe prominent. Larger than a Buzzard. Nervous - I saw it chased away by a Pheasant yesterday. Click above to see an image of the bird though I hope to post a sharper picture soon. Any ideas anyone? Please either post a message on this sightings board or email david.peduzzi@btinternet.com.

A ringtail Hen Harrier and a few Bramblings near The Burgh and a Barn Owl by the river just by Pulborough train station.

12 Jan 2008 Another Barn Owl
This is old news. I have just caught up on the recent flurry of Barn Owl sightings, so thought I should mention that I saw one on 12 January at Peppering High Barn, midway between Burpham and The Burgh.

26 Jan 2008 Whooper Swans
The elusive WHOOPER SWANS flew low over my house in South Mundham calling loudly on Saturday at 16.55 heading towards Chichester and again on Sunday at almost the identical time. They came from the direction of the small lake adjacent to the reservoir between Runcton Lane and Bognor Road where many Mute Swans congregate during the day. Please note that access to the lake and reservoir is not allowed.

29 Jan 2008 Swans 'n' Shrike 'n' stuff   more...
The goose is definately a Pink-footed. Ian Barnard and I saw it well on Sunday from Rackham, and I had it again today from the Sportsman pub. The GREAT GREY SHRIKE was initially seen below the pub this morning, and then again in a tree right out on the brooks. I last saw it flying right, presumably to where Bernie saw it. I had 1 Water Pipit at Coldwaltham sewage works for about 5 minutes until a herd of workmen started unloading scaffold towers etc. There were at least 4 Chiffchaffs in the lane, including the 'tristis' type which showed well. Also worth mentioning that the WHOOPER SWANS (click above for a photo) were again on the East Trout Lake, Chichester this morning. I know people have struggled to see these as they've been coming in just on dusk and departing again at first light. After getting there this morning at 06.45 to make sure I saw them, I was still watching them glide round the lake at 09.15!  (No sign of them at 09.45 - Paul James).

29 Jan 2008 West Sussex today
A tour round various sites in West Sussex today started with no sign of the Cattle Egrets in the field to the west of School Lane, North Mundham though we did see a single CATTLE EGRET nearby (with a Little Egret) in Leythorne Meadow, Runcton. A Red Kite was over the B2141 just south of Chilgrove while a quick stop at West Dean Woods produced ca. 20 Bramblings, Marsh Tit and Nuthatch in the beeches along the road west of Lodge Hill Farm. Both Wood Larks and Dartford Warblers were singing and showing well on Ambersham Common. The Bittern was not on view at Burton Mill Pond and neither were the Water Pipits at Coldwaltham probably due to the presence of workmen in the sewage works compound. The GREAT GREY SHRIKE was showing fairly distantly from the garden of The Sportsman in Amberley (thanks to Nick Paul for pointing it out) and also the grey goose variously reported as a Bean and Pink-footed over the last few days. It was too far away to determine the colour of the bill or legs - suffice to say that at times they looked pink and other times orange! Has anyone seen it well at close range? A herd of 29 Bewick's Swans (inc 3 juvs) beside the road between Warningcamp and Burpham finished off a good day. (Paul James & Beryl James).

29 Jan 2008 Pagham Hen Harrier
Whilst waiting for the Short-eared Owls at the west side fields to put in a show, which typically had been seen prior to us reaching that point, a ringtail Hen Harrier quartered the field briefly before being mobbed by a crow, which made up for the no show of said owl.

29 Jan 2008 Bewick's at Burpham   more...
In answer to Richard Cowser the ring number is 14J, it is the same bird that has been coming back to the Arun Valley for the past 4 years. I have informed the BTO and filled out the online register form. The Amberley GREAT GREY SHRIKE was seen fairly well from just east of Rackham Mill this pm, it was in bushes at map reference TQ044137. No sign of any Water Pipits or unusual Chiffchaffs at the Waltham sewage works at dusk.

29 Jan 2008 Short-eared Owls   more...

29 Jan 2008 Lapland Bunting
Following a report of a Snow Bunting along Selsey seafront today I dropped down, relocated it and identified it as a LAPLAND BUNTING. It was feeding along the main footpath and on the wall near the lifeboat station, up to about 100yds east. It was quite confiding and showed very well, but as constant walkers disturbed it, it would fly up and usually relocate further along the path, that is up until 16.05 when it flew inland over the houses and was lost to view. No sign of the reported 1st winter Iceland Gull seen resting on a groyne by the entrance to the car park at the end of Hillfield Road, Selsey at 10.55. (From www.birdguides.com).

29 Jan 2008 Cattle Egret   more...
A CATTLE EGRET in Leythorne Meadow SWT reserve, Vinnetrow Road (next to Runcton Lake GP) with a Little Egret for company. No sign of the second bird. Viewed from the gate opposite the business park at 15.30.  (Note that it was also seen at about 10.15 this morning again in the company of the Little Egret - Paul James).

29 Jan 2008 Cattle Egrets reach Pooh village!   more...
While listening to a discussion on egrets on BBC Radio 4's Home Planet this afternoon I glanced out my car to see one in the middle of a field off the B2110 just as I entered Hartfield from the east. I stopped as soon as I could and walked back to confirm it was a CATTLE EGRET feeding energetically by probing into the grass. Although the field was unstocked there had been cattle in there before winter.

29 Jan 2008 Bewick's Swans   more...
A herd of 34 Bewick's Swans (and 8 Mute Swans) on the watermeadows north of Warningcamp and south of Burpham of which  27 were adults and 7 juveniles. One of the adults was good enough to stretch its leg, which had a large white ring on it. Unfortunately I didn't have a scope with me so was unable to read its number. Does anyone know if it is the same ringed bird that has been in the Arun Valley the last 4 winters?
