05 Nov 2008 Shoreham Birds   more...
A short visit to Shoreham Harbour this morning produced a large flock of mainly Greenfinches feeding around and amongst the vegetated shingle. My best count was 150 birds. Two Rock Pipits on the beach and Grey Wagtail feeding on the inner arm. Offshore 15 Common Scoters found by the Horsham RSPB group. At Widewater the Water Rail has returned and was busy feeding along the edge of the Tamarisk Island. Two Stonechats and a Rock Pipit on the beach. At Brooklands Lagoon and park unable to find any rarities lurking in the bushes - just a couple Chiffchaffs with the tits and Goldcrests. Driving into Worthing late morning a Woodcock flew from the beach over the main road and disappeared into Beach House Park! Luckily it missed my car!

04 Nov 2008 Hope Gap, Crowlink and Birling Gap

Been too long since I've had time for a proper day out and a good excuse today to try out my new bins (thanks Russ!). So a 6am bus ride from Brighton to Seven Sisters up the west side to Hope Gap then over Crowlink to Birling Gap this afternoon. Species of note were 1 Redwing, 3 Fieldfares, 2 Kestrels, Sparrowhawk, Green Woodpecker, 2 Rock Pipits on the beach and the usual finch flocks at Hope Gap and, at Crowlink, a Dartford Warbler on top of gorse with several pairs of Stonechats in attendance. At Birling Gap on path from Crowlink a Firecrest. On cliff path halfway between Belle Tout lighthouse and the Hotel a Ring Ouzel calling and attempting to hunker down in gorse for the night. (It seemed to be partially leucistic with a piebald (Dusky Thrush-like!!) head, unless it was moult - plumage otherwise normal for torquatus). At Belle Tout early evening 2 male and 1 fem/imm Black Redstart and in Horseshoe Plantation a Firecrest heard amongst the Goldcrests but too dark by then to even locate them!

04 Nov 2008 Buchan Park Crawley
At least 250 (possibly 400!) Redpolls feeding in silver birches between plantation and golf course. True size of flock not revealed until a passing male Sparrowhawk showed up. At least 100 of the Redpolls grouped together and mobbed the hawk whilst it sat in the top of a birch. Around 50 Siskins regular in alders by car park and Crossbills also present around the plantation area in ones or twos, most days.

04 Nov 2008 Arun valley   more...
The first part of the morning we decided to visit the Climping area, birding around Atherington and the Old Windmill. Not wishing to tread on Owens’s toes (I'm sure he will post a more detailed report today) we had a few good birds including 2 Firecrests, 2 Chiffchaffs and 2 Swallows flying east along he beach. A Mediterranean Gull, 4 Stonechats and 3 Rock Pipits were feeding on the foreshore. Moving inland we called in at Coldwaltham Sewage Works finding very little of note. At Wiggonholt Common we heard calling Crossbill, Siskin and Redpoll. At The Burgh 3 Ravens flew east, 2 Peregrines, 50+ Redwings and a few Corn Buntings with Reed Buntings and Redpoll. The highlight of the day was counting the Grey Partridges - we had a total of 126, with the largest covey of 40 birds. No sign of any Short-eared Owls although we did leave by 15.45. (Bernie Forbes & Dave Smith).

04 Nov 2008 Climping Gap
Fairly slow going at the Gap this morning despite the very promising conditions (murky, cloudy with light E/NE breeze). A couple of Firecrests were about the best on offer, and further bush-bashing produced 5 Chiffchaffs, 15 Goldcrests and 5 Stonechats. There was some visible migration with 280 Goldfinches, 8 Siskins, 2 Redpolls and 2 Swallows passing through, whilst thrushes were much in evidence (ca. 50 Blackbirds, 15 Song Thrushes and 2 Redwings). Three Rock Pipits were on the beach with Meadow Pipits, and 8 Grey Partridges were in the fields.

03 Nov 2008 The Famous four go birding again...   more...
A dull, windy and dreary day but notable as it involved four old friends managing to get together and go birding together in Sussex for the first time in ages! Most of our day was spent at East Head/West Wittering and good views were obtained of the 2 Snow Buntings at the far end of the Head. A check of a couple of likely spots eventually produced a Jack Snipe we all managed to see well. Plenty of Wigeon out on Snowhill Marsh and several hundred Dark-bellied Brent Geese on the grassy car park; careful scanning in difficult conditions failed to produce anything unusual in the flock, which contained only 3 young birds. In the bushes a couple of active flocks of Long-tailed Tits had only 1 Chiffchaff and a few Goldcrests with them. Blackbirds and Song Thrushes were also obvious. We moved on to Pagham Harbour/Church Norton which was also quiet. The usual wildfowl and wader species were present and a lone Red-breasted Merganser flew past, whilst the bushes had nothing much to offer. Time for a team photo (attached) and a last stop at the Ferry where 2 Avocets showed in the gloom, before we set off home for tea!

03 Nov 2008 Winter visitors
Occasional flocks of Starlings and Woodpigeons seen passing inland between Dungeness and Hastings this morning. A Hen Harrier circling over a field near Icklesham and a flock of 25 Golden Plovers flew east over Fairlight. Also parties of finches, especially Goldfinches which were heading out. Most of these observations made while driving along the coast!
