Garden Viewing

Our semi rural garden in Easebourne provided excellent viewing - without getting cold! A pair of Redpolls feeding in the silver birches (possibly up to 6 in all). Nuthatch, Green and Great Spotted Woodpecker. Many tits including Long-tailed. Only my second ever viewing of Redpoll in the garden.Posted on 01 Jan 2008 by Peter & Peta Davis

SOS Bird Race
Alan Loweth, Matt Kirk and myself (Egret birders East Grinstead RSPB group members) decided to partake in the SOS Bird Race today, to get our year list off to a flying start. We headed west and were on the North Wall at Pagham before daylight. We moved onto Sidlesham Ferry Pool, Church Norton, West Wittering and East Head before returning inland to the Downs above North Stoke, Amberley, then into Pulborough Brooks finishing off at Greatham Bridge. Highlights were a Barn Owl perched alongside the Storrington - Amberley road, Water Rail and Grey and Golden Plover at the North Wall. On the sea at Church Norton we had three Red-breasted Mergansers, single Red-throated Diver, and single Slavonian Grebe. We had a Great Northern Diver in the channel north of East Head, the summer plumaged Bar-tailed Godwit, and then the RED-BREASTED GOOSE and BLACK BRANT in the field behind the car park. Highlights on the Downs were two quartering Short-eared Owls, ringtail Hen Harrier, two Common Buzzards, together with Kestrel and Sparrowhawk. A great day and 85 species seen. A possible Yellow-browed Warbler heard calling 4 or 5 times with a tit flock in Purchase Wood today (although I couldn't see it and the birds moved off fairly quickly). 43 other species around the village included all three woodpeckers, Pochard, Grey Wagtail and 1st winter Mediterranean Gull. Bramblings
more... |
The flock of Bramblings and Chaffinches reported yesterday opposite the "Black Horse" pub at Telham (on the A2100 SE of Battle) was still there late this morning today. Weather gloomy and damp, so counting them difficult. Estimate at least 50 birds in the flock, which seems to frequent a maize stubblefield (crop may not have been harvested).Posted on 01 Jan 2008 by Robin Harris

New Year's Day
Happy New Year to all, got out a bit today starting at Swanbourne Lake where we managed to find a redhead Smew. Moving onto West Wittering we saw the RED-BREASTED GOOSE and BLACK BRANT before they were flushed by what sounded like a gun-shot. At Selsey, we saw 4 Red-throated Divers, a Black-throated Diver and a Great Northern Diver, a single adult Mediterranean Gull and ca. 30 Common Scoter. At Pagham we saw at least 18 Slavonian Grebes offshore at Church Norton. Finished the day off with a single Short-eared Owl from the path which leads from Church Norton to the Visitor Centre. Lots of birders out in the field today so look forward to pages of sightings! 81 species seen.Posted on 01 Jan 2008 by Nick Bond

A great day at Pulborough Brooks.
With a clear blue sky, no wind, and the sun just warming the air we looked forward to spending a very pleasant few hours bird watching. At most of the viewing points were very good numbers of Wigeon and Teal. Also a few Pintail, Shoveler and Shelduck. Many thousands of Lapwing. Our high point was a female Peregrine swooping down on the large flocks of birds trying in vain to pick out one of the weaker birds. Redwings working the hedgerows in many of the fields. A Green Woodpecker and a Jay in the trees at the rear of the main building. Many different tits on the feeders at the side and the front. All this and fantastic weather.Posted on 01 Jan 2008 by Steve Hodgson-Berry
