29 Dec 2008 Pulbough Brooks & Greatham Bridge
My wife and I spent a few hours at Pulborough Brooks, but most of the water frozen so not much close, lots of Wigeon plus Pintail, Shoveler, Teal, Mallard, Canada Geese, Grey Heron, about 40+ Snipe and a few hundred Lapwing. We then went on to Greatham Bridge hoping to see a Barn or Short-eared Owl, no luck with them but a female Hen Harrier was hunting over the marsh. After we drove over the bridge back towards Pulborough we had a Barn Owl flying along beside the car for 100yds - a very good end to the day.

02 Feb 2008 'eastern' chiffchaffs
I've only seen normal looking Chiffchaffs at Coldwaltham on both my recent visits this year. Those interested in 'eastern' Chiffchaffs are directed to BBRC's latest press release (10 January 2008)  http://www.bbrc.org.uk/100108.htm. In summary, in 2008 BBRC is requesting that counties forward descriptions accepted or nearly so by them against the following criteria: Absence of olive in the crown and mantle, absence of yellow away from the underwing, presence of a grey-brown or pale brown hue in the upperparts, presence of warm buff in the supercilium and ear-coverts, presence of buff at the breast-sides/flanks, very black-looking bill and legs, a thin, piping near-monosyllabic Bullfinch-like or Dunnock-like call, a song markedly different from western Chiffchaff’s They stress the importance of obtaining representative photos and sound recordings although "Field descriptions will be an important source of information but (particularly if unaccompanied by images or recordings) must be very detailed and focus specifically on a full and precise evaluation of plumage hues. Notes should demonstrate that views were good enough and over a long enough period to assess the bird’s true appearance and that full account has been taken of the effect of light conditions on perceived hues. Any transcriptions of calls or songs should be as detailed as possible."  Dean and Svensson (British Birds 98: 396-410) remains the key text. I am unaware of any Sussex records matching the above criteria in full.

03 Feb 2008 'White-headed' Long-tailed Tit   more...
I've been trying to formerly identify the 'white headed' Long-tailed Tits that I have had in both my Crowborough garden and down Pilmer Woods. I saw one again today and fortunately I had a camera. I've attached a picture (click above), it's poor quality, but may help in properly identifying the race. Any thoughts would be welcome.

03 Mar 2008 12 Herons Warnham Mill Pond Horsham
I saw 12 herons flying around together this morning at approx. 7.30am to the east of Warnham Mill Pond, Horsham, West Sussex. Earlier I had noticed 6 herons perched in the 3 tree tops in the wood between the lake and the railway line - quite a regular sighting at the moment and fascinating to watch but then - a lttle later I counted at least 12 flying around together! I don't know if anyone else is is aware of this as the activity is to the rear of the lake away from 'general public' view.

26 Jan 2008 1st winter Glaucous Gull - Pagham   more...
A record shot of the GLAUCOUS GULL first seen by myself at 11.40 am flying into the harbour and out of view for a good while before giving itself up at high tide and viewed well from Church Norton. A record shot is attached (click above). I am sure this bird is different from the Southwick bird as has a slightly larger complexion and looked darker in appearance.

19 Sep 2008 379 not out   more...
Not sure if this is a record total at Pagham Lagoon and in the adjacent harbour?  Dave Smith and I simultaneously counted 379 (!) Mediterranean Gulls in two flocks this morning, the majority of the birds were adult or second year birds with a low percentage of 1st winters mixed in the two flocks. Around the beach and North Wall 2 Greenshank and a few Wheatears with low number of Yellow Wagtails flying over. At Church Norton few waders in the harbour although Wigeon and Teal and small numbers of Pintail building up. Lots of Common Buzzards up thermalling all over the reserve and surrounding area with at least 4 Sparrowhawks, 2 Peregrines out in the harbour and a Marsh Harrier that flew towards the North Wall. Roosting on the old jetty at Church Norton were a few Sandwich and Common Terns and a single Arctic Tern. We counted small parties of Siskin moving through totalling 150 birds and at least one Grey Wagtail. Around Norton Church a Hobby. At West Fields, Selsey a 1st winter female Merlin, 2 Marsh Harriers and 10 Common Buzzards. Two Ruff on the marsh in the rough grazing area. On the way home 2 Hobbies hunting over Ivy Lake, Chichester GPs. (Bernie Forbes, Dave Smith & Dorian Mason).
