07 Dec 2008 Brent Geese at Brooklands
I had to take my son to play football in Worthing this morning and had a quick look at Brooklands Lake en route, and much to my surprise there were a pair of Brent Geese feeding amongst the gulls on the grass beside the lake, oblivious to the people and dogs coming and going around them.

06 Dec 2008 Firecrests
In response to Sharifin Gardiner's (possibly rhetorical) question, Firecrests have definitely become far more common in recent years - both british crest species' populations suffered terribly in the hard winters of the early 80s, but the mild conditions we've experienced since have allowed not only population recovery, but also perhaps greater numbers than were previously present. It's still quite lucky to get them in your garden though! this winter's predicted colder weather may well mean more urban and garden sightings as birds are forced to seek shelter and warmth.. Hopefully my favourite british bird species will not suffer losses like those of 25 years ago.

06 Dec 2008 A walk through Pilmer Woods   more...
A cold but sunny afternoon walk down through the woods and onto the recreation grounds. It was very quiet in and around the woodland with only a few Redpoll, Siskin, Goldfinch, Chaffinch and Greenfinch moving through. Bullfinch were present in slightly more numbers, but very hard to see. Nuthatch, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Coal Tit, Marsh Tit, Long-Tailed Tit and Goldcrest were all present throughout the area in small feeding flocks. A single Great Spotted Woodpecker showed for a couple of seconds and then was gone. Just the odd Meadow Pipit, Pied Wagtail, Blackbird, Song Thrush, Redwing and Fieldfare on the recreation grounds. Wrens, Dunnocks and a Green Woodpecker calling distantly but never seen. Surprisingly Jays were in good numbers, I counted 12 over the whole walk. Magpies, Crows, Jackdaws and Wood Pigeon were also present in good numbers. The only bird of prey and highlight of the afternoon was a female Sparrowhawk whistling past me.

06 Dec 2008 Firecrest at Rodmell again
A female Firecrest in my garden again-from the kitchen window. Perhaps the same bird as on Nov 30th. The bird on 20th Nov was a male, also one on 25th March. Are Firecrests becoming more common or am I just lucky? In the last week of Nov we also had a male Blackcap and a Chiff-chaff as well as our regular Green Woodpecker, a Coal Tit and a Great Spotted Woodpecker.

04 Dec 2008 Kingfishers in East Grinstead
Over the course of the last year, I'm pleased to note several sighting of Kingfishers around East Grinstead. The most recent was at Hurst Farm Pond ( a small pond just off of Hurst Farm Road ) plus several around Moat Pond ( which is in the middle of town! ). Prior to this I'd only ever seen two, one on a small river outside Hartfield, and the other in Crete!

05 Dec 2008 Thorney Island
Fairly quiet on Thorney Island this morning as I took my dog for a walk along the west side. It kicked off well with a pair of flyover Fieldfares heading north and a Chiffchaff flitting around the bushes by the paddocks. A Grey Wagtail flew over the Sewage Works. Out in Emsworth Harbour, I failed to locate any Golden Plovers on the mudflats though two Greenshank showed well. Good number of Mergansers and Little Grebes in the channel. Little Deeps held 7 Pochard and 4 Gadwall and the Great Deeps had 3 Pintail. Single Kingfisher on there too. Pair of Stonechats on the main footpath and a female Bullfinch opposite the stables.

05 Dec 2008 Splash Point   more...
After a few utterly futile attempts to find anything on the sea at Splash Point recently, a two hour bitterly cold vigil in excellent light and wind conditons proved remarkably productive with one Black-throated Diver (briefly landed on the sea before going west at 10.40); one Great Northern Diver fairly close inshore going east (possibly two); 4 Red-throated Diver; 14 Diver sp.;12 Brent Geese; 11 Common Scoter; several Fulmar; one Auk sp. and 6 Gannets. In addition, on the beach beneath the cliffs at Splash Point I recorded an adult Yellow-legged Gull and what appeared (to my untutored eye) to be a recently deceased Dolphin around 70 cm in length.
