13 Aug 2009 Young raptors move west from Cissbury Ring   more...

By this afternoon (Thursday), the young Buzzards had ventured further across the fields and trees and made their way to the fringes of the woodland adjoining the houses at Nepcote. If it had not been for the mewing I could hear from my garden I would not have known they were present.

20 Feb 2009 Young Peregrine

Really pleased to see a young Peregrine (probably first winter) perched on a pylon just south of Uckfield today. It's a different one(and looks unringed) than the one that has been seen here in recent months. Also the local Rooks are beginning to gather sticks for nest building.

08 Sep 2008 You win some, you lose some
A busy day today was punctuated by a couple of treats to make up for not having time to see the 5 Grey Phalaropes at Bracklesham Bay RSPB (tomorrow, maybe). Firstly, during a very brief visit to Church Norton, I saw an Osprey heading west at 8.30am, seen, I gather, at Bracklesham half an hour later. And secondly, at dusk, a Barn Owl drifted into our Sidlesham garden for a brief survey of the long grass, the first sighting here in six years.

06 Nov 2009 Yet More Woodpigeons

Woodpigeon flocks from 30 - 200 passing west over Ferring from 07.15 until 08.15. Not really counted but I would estimate 3000. Most moving just inland from the coast, some half a mile inland over the house.

02 May 2009 Yet more Kites

Following widespread Kite sightings recently, today a Red Kite flew over Streat Lane near Plumpton at 1.30pm and another flew over the A29 at Bury at 5pm, the later had a yellow wing tag on its right wing, any ideas as to its origin?

10 Jan 2010 Yet more Fieldfares

After the visit of over 50 Fieldfares to the Malus tree in our front garden in Aldwick on Wednesday a lone bird took up residence and for the last 3 days warded off any other birds which tried to feed on the tree until mid-day today when at least 100 Fieldfares arrived and started stripping the fruit from the Malus - at 13.00 the tree plus our front lawn were a seething mass of birds - an awesome and memorable sight!

25 Jan 2010 Yet more Bewick's   more...

Even larger group of Bewick's Swans today south of Rye Farm on Henfield Levels. I counted 26 including 7 juveniles looking from the fields just to the west of the old railway line. Later, saw a family of 2 adults with 2 young from the river bank, but they could have been part of the original group, which from the river were then too far away and hidden. Sallie Bedford found 6 Egyptian Geese in the same area yesterday, and some Gadwall, but I couldn't find these today, though could hear Wigeon. Must have been up to 2,000 Black-headed Gulls on the water too. Yesterday the lake/floods at TQ197182 had about 1000 duck, split roughly 70:30 Wigeon:Teal, with 50 or so Mallard, 15 Lapwing and a Heron; west of Betley Bridge were 14 Snipe, flocks of Canada and Greylag Geese. Also had lovely view of Barn Owl between old railway line and Great Betley at roughly lunchtime.

31 Mar 2008 Yesterday's birds
Started off at Ovingdean where the SURF SCOTER was showing at distance from 8.15am until at least 10.30am. Also of note going E were 7 Common Scoter, a Gannet, and a Red-breasted Merganser (m). Ivy Lake produced the two Little Gulls at around 12.30pm which showed very well, while at Pagham Lagoon the Black-necked Grebe showed well but again no sign of the Garganey or Little Gull. At Selsey Bill from 3pm and there were several Common Scoter at sea but nothing else of interest up until 4.30pmPosted on 01 Apr 2008 by Jacob Everitt
01 Mar 2009 Yellowhammers in garden

Yellowhammers have been feeding on the ground under my feeders in my rural garden near Uckfield for the past few days. They do this every year at this time of year. I presume natural food is now in short supply. Also had a Grey Wagtail in my garden yesterday, presumably on passage.

30 Mar 2008 Yellowhammers in Broad Oak, Rye garden
Our garden in Broad Oak, Rye backs onto farmland and since Easter we have noted Yellowhammers feeding on the ground at the boundary of a grassed and bare area. Our maximum count has been 5 males and 5 females but 3 males are the norm. The birds are typically present about an hour after dawn. Posted on 31 Mar 2008 by John Phillips
15 May 2009 Yellowhammers

We have had Yellowhammers visiting our Adur Valley garden for the last two months or so. There is a male/female pair and I've seen two males in the garden too. Today we saw the male Yellowhammer chasing another bird - a Reed Bunting we think. I've never heard of Yellowhammers visiting gardens but it obviously happens. Does anyone else see them in their gardens? On the subject of House Sparrow terraces, ours was put up this winter but we have had no takers.

18 May 2009 Yellowhammers   more...

Yellowhammers regularly feed in our garden and are very partial to spilt sunflower hearts and ground feed. We live just south of the A283 nr Storrington. We also had a Reed Bunting pay us a visit during March this year.

19 Dec 2008 Yellowhammer
For a good number of years we had a regular wintering flock of Yellowhammers here in our garden, in Aldwick (nr Bognor Regis). Alas, of recent years the annual number has declined steadily from a maximum of at least 30 birds, and last year was down to around six individuals. This autumn/winter? Well, I looked out just before lunch today and noted the first of this 'season', a nice male in full colour. It was in company with several Chaffinches, so it is probable that it was they which 'brought' this lone individual in. I shall be watching over the next week or so!

30 Sep 2009 Yellow-legged Gulls in the East

At Crowlink a tit-flock 50-strong comprised 35 Long-tailed Tits, the rest being Blue and Great Tits and Chiffchaffs. At Cuckmere Haven 14.30 - 15.00 a 280-strong flock of common big gulls held two adult Yellow-legged Gulls which I think are pretty uncommon in East Sussex. On east beach, Newhaven later on were 24 Ringed Plovers but no Little Stints, doubtless put to flight by dogs.
