Yesterday's birds
Started off at Ovingdean where the SURF SCOTER was showing at distance from 8.15am until at least 10.30am. Also of note going E were 7 Common Scoter, a Gannet, and a Red-breasted Merganser (m). Ivy Lake produced the two Little Gulls at around 12.30pm which showed very well, while at Pagham Lagoon the Black-necked Grebe showed well but again no sign of the Garganey or Little Gull. At Selsey Bill from 3pm and there were several Common Scoter at sea but nothing else of interest up until 4.30pm Posted on 01 Apr 2008 by Jacob Everitt |

Our maximum count has been 5 males and 5 females but 3 males are the norm. The birds are typically present about an hour after dawn. Posted on 31 Mar 2008 by John Phillips |

Working party Pagham Harbour
Hi to you all. Just to remind you that the first of the weeding projects is taking place on Tuesday 15th January. We aim to weed part of the tern island in Pagham Harbour, meeting in the Church Norton car park at 08.30. The early start is essential due to the low tide and we only have perhaps 2 hours to carry out the task. Ivan Lang who is the warden at the harbour will be coordinating the task. If any one would like to come and help that would be wonderful. Don’t forget your wellies and warm clothes. Posted on 12 Jan 2008 by Bernie Forbes |

Woods Mill - Stretham Atlas Walk
On our Atlas walk this morning between Woods Mill and Stretham Manor, Bryan Michie and I were fortunate to find a Firecrest about 100 metres past the sewage plant in the hedge on your right hand side as you walk up the stream from Woods Mill. Also to add to the Barn Owl sightings, one is seen regularly hunting around Woods Mill at the moment and is often sitting outside its' box in Little Meadow. Another Barn owl seen mid-afternoon on Sat 9th Feb in the field next to Stretham Manor. Posted on 16 Feb 2008 by Mike Russell |

Woodpecker Family
Three juvenile Great Spotted Woodpeckers with both parent birds feeding them in the tree and on the feeders five feet from my kitchen window in Catsfield this morning. What a time waster! Also a Common Buzzard cruising at rooftop height above the hedge of the field opposite last evening. This is the first year that I have ever seen them so close to the centre of the village. Woodcock at Old Lodge
An evening walk between 7.30 and 10pm provided close sightings of a Hobby, a pair of Bullfinches and a long close up of a very confiding male Dartford Warbler from Black Hill carpark. On the reserve, between 9 and 9.15pm, four single Woodcock flew over, one almost over my head with a rasping, froglike call. They may have been only two individuals, as the second two were flying in the opposite direction. Just before 10 pm a calling Tawny Owl, but no Nightjars, maybe because the wind had become quite strong. Last Friday 16th on the reserve two singing male Tree Pipits and 3 Redstarts (a male, a female and a fledgling). Posted on 24 May 2008 by Sharifin Gardiner |

Wood Larks
Three Wood Larks flying and singing together near Horsham. Sadly the field which we think has been the nest site for several years is to be ploughed now that set-aside has gone. This has been a wonderful fallow field full of insects and other wildlife. The chap who lives at the lodge, and seems to have some input into the management of the fields, says that it may be possible just to take a cutting of hay this year but that next year the owner will demand that it is ploughed and sown with a crop. Don't you just love the EU! Posted on 04 Feb 2008 by Mike Hall |
