02 Jan 2008 Great White Egret at Piddinghoe
GREAT WHITE EGRET flew west, low over Piddinghoe Church at 09.20 this morning, after taking off from meadow on the far bank of the Ouse near the railway line, unmistakable by huge size, also black feet. Maybe this was the bird which was reported on Birdline yesterday as being seen 3/4 mile south of Southease bridge?

01 Jan 2008 Henfield "Bird Race"
A group of 4 Henfield Birders enjoyed their "race" against their last year's total of 50, and exceeded it by 4 this year, walking from Woods Mill to Stretham then along the Adur to return to Henfield from the north. We followed a Green Sandpiper along the river, saw a rather lonely looking male Shoveler on a pond - 2 male and 1 female Reed Buntings, a Yellowhammer and pair of Stonechats were seen together at the same spot (TQ192162), several Snipe flew up from the next field, and at the river fork, everyone had wonderful views of a Kingfisher. And we never even saw a Collared Dove! It is not too late to join in the New Year Bird Race - for details e-mail Val Bentley on chetsford@talk21.com

01 Jan 2008 SOS Bird Race
Alan Loweth, Matt Kirk and myself (Egret birders East Grinstead RSPB group members) decided to partake in the SOS Bird Race today, to get our year list off to a flying start. We headed west and were on the North Wall at Pagham before daylight. We moved onto Sidlesham Ferry Pool, Church Norton, West Wittering and East Head before returning inland to the Downs above North Stoke, Amberley, then into Pulborough Brooks finishing off at Greatham Bridge. Highlights were a Barn Owl perched alongside the Storrington - Amberley road, Water Rail and Grey and Golden Plover at the North Wall. On the sea at Church Norton we had three Red-breasted Mergansers, single Red-throated Diver, and single Slavonian Grebe. We had a Great Northern Diver in the channel north of East Head, the summer plumaged Bar-tailed Godwit, and then the RED-BREASTED GOOSE and BLACK BRANT in the field behind the car park. Highlights on the Downs were two quartering Short-eared Owls, ringtail Hen Harrier, two Common Buzzards, together with Kestrel and Sparrowhawk. A great day and 85 species seen.
