| Teal, Sparrowhawk & Siskin Maps |
|
Sunday 7th February 2010 These maps include all SOS, TTV, Birdtrack and roving records from the first two winter Atlas periods, November 2007-February 2008 and November 2008-February 2009, with the exception of most SOS records for 2009. Garden BirdWatch records only from the period November/December 2007 are included. These maps do not incorporate any records from this winter (November 2009 to date). TEAL – First two winter seasons provisional distribution map.

These birds inhabit a wide variety of shallow water habitats in winter, including estuaries, coastal lagoons, marshes, river shallows and flooded pastures (so look out for them in newly flooded places!). They feed by day and night, walking slowly through shallow water, dabbling with their bill and with head submerged.
SPARROWHAWK – First two winter seasons provisional distribution map.
Click here to open a larger map in a new window. Sparrowhawk was recorded in 46.4% of the county’s tetrads during the first two winter seasons. These birds are widespread across the county in woods, wooded farms and urban areas, and can often be spotted at dusk.
SISKIN – First two winter seasons provisional distribution map.
Click here to open a larger map in a new window. Siskin was recorded in 25.4% of the county’s tetrads during the first two winter seasons. This small finch often feeds on birch and then alder seeds in winter, but as tree seeds become in short supply they will increasingly frequent gardens in search of food over the next few weeks. |
