Buzzard, Kingfisher & Linnet Maps

Sunday 3rd January 2010

These maps include all SOS, TTV, Birdtrack and roving records from the first two winter Atlas periods, November 2007-February 2008 and November 2008-February 2009, with the exception of most SOS records for 2009. Garden BirdWatch records only from the period November/December 2007 are included. These maps do not incorporate any records from this winter (November 2009 to date).

BUZZARD – First two winter seasons provisional distribution map.

Common Buzzard has so far been recorded in 49.4% of the county’s tetrads. Its spread eastwards is evident, but there are still tetrads where we would expect to receive records for it, but where it has so far been unrecorded – particularly in the western two-thirds of the county. A good way to find it at this time of the year is to listen out for its high, plaintive peeoo call as it circles in the sky.

KINGFISHER – First two winter seasons provisional distribution map.

Kingfisher has so far been recorded in 14.8% of the county’s tetrads. Look for it along any quietly flowing river, or at any pond or lake, sitting on a low branch or other perch which gives it a good view of the water below. In severe weather it will seek ice-free waters such as saltmarsh creeks and coastal lagoons.

LINNET – First two winter seasons provisional distribution map.

Linnet has so far been recorded in 20.2% of the county’s tetrads, which is about a third of the breeding season tetrads. Although some of our breeding Linnets migrate southwards, many remain. They only eat small seeds, so look out for them particularly in fallow fields and where there is winter stubble.
