| Sighting Description |
At dawn it was calm and very clear. My first stop was at the dam where the Little Ringed Plover pair had reappeared minus the youngster, also again plenty of juv' Pied Wagtails with them. Around the sailing club both Garden Warbler and Blackcap were trying to outdo each other with their songs. Several Goldfinches again and Chiffchaffs also noted in the vicinity. From here the two Ospreys were again seen, quite distantly at first, gradually drifting closer over the middle of the reservoir. At this time a Red Kite was seen distantly also flying behind them. For good measure a female Sparrowhawk flew through causing some mayhem among the smaller birds, the first I've seen for a while, and to round off a pair of Kestrels were hanging around the dam today. Below the dam there was plenty of activity with Yellowhammers in song, four birds were found, also 12 Common Whitethroats, a Lesser Whitethroat and Reed Warbler by the lagoon. In the paddock a nice Spotted Flycatcher showed well hunting insects from the posts whilst a Sky Lark sang gloriously overhead. The House Martins are, it seems, nesting on the rear of the waterworks building, also few Swallows again and 15 or so Swifts, two of which were seen mating on the wing. A Green and four Great Spotted Woodpeckers were in this area plus five Linnets. At the west end five Common Terns still, again vocal and showing well. It was their more excited calls that alerted me to the reappearance of the Red Kite that drifted overhead before gaining height and again flying south, giving all those present a superb show. This bird having lost some of the inner primaries, making it look quite distinctive and almost certainly the bird seen yesterday. Also noted of course were Common Buzzards, four of which were seen at once. A couple of Stock Doves were whizzing about and the Great Spotted Woodpecker juv's were flying to and fro in front of the hide. I left late morning. |
