| Sighting Description |
Having been away for three and a half weeks, and only having brief visits to the reservoir since I returned on the 21st, it was lovely being here prior to dawn. The singing was quite deafening at times, mostly from Garden Warbler, Blackcap and Common Whitethroat. On the dam seven Common Sandpipers were teetering along the waters edge, with a few Pied Wagtails. Then at 04.50 a large bird caught my eye, to my delight it was an adult Osprey clearing fishing at mid-reservoir, then whilst viewing through the 'scope another joined it. They remained in view until 05.15 by which time breakfast was caught by both birds and they drifted off towards East Grinstead being lost to view in the trees. At one point they were mobbed by a pair of Common Terns which they just plainly ignored. Below the dam at least eight Goldcrests were noted also three Blackcap and five Garden Warblers. There was also evidence that both Reed bunting and Yellowhammer had bred successfully this year. The count of birds this morning was impressive but by the time I'd got to 20 Common Whitethroats I stopped counting, numerous Chiffchaffs were around, plus three singing Willow Warblers along the north bank. Here good views of Cuckoo and female Bullfinch were obtained plus a lovely Lesser Whitethroat too. Tit numbers were still very high along here, whilst the dam produced two Jays and two Green Woodpeckers. At the paddock a Spotted Flycatcher was new few the year plus a pair of Stock Doves were courting in the field. Of note Swallows are breeding on the bore tower by the dam this year. In the car park a brief view of a Firecrest is one of the long stayers I hope. At the west end the pair of Common Terns have proclaimed ownership of one of the rafts, the heronry was still very busy and two Great spotted Woodpeckers were in the car park. At Whillett's another Willow Warbler, Reed Bunting and more Blackcaps, Garden Warblers and Common Whitethroats. I've still yet to see both Kingfisher or Hobby this year. Still I was back home by 7am, thoroughly pleased. |
