Sighting Description

While driving home at 21.00, just off the B2139 north of Storrington/Sullington, as I rounded a corner an upright creature in the middle of the road turned out to be a Tawny Owl, caught full in the headlights and looking as surprised as I was. It was not obviously feeding on anything or trying to pick something up (though it may have been about to do so). This was the best view I have had of one for many a year, but I only just braked in time otherwise it would have been a casualty. It did then fly off into the roadside trees. (There may have been another one flying over the B2139 a little further north a few minutes earlier, but it was only a glimpse so I could not be sure).
