| Sighting Description |
Another morning at the local patch, this time five hours of tramping around the reservoir. First thing I was at the west end looking at the fields and hedgerows opposite the lay-by where a flock of 50 House Sparrows was entertaining and involved birds in all varying states of dress. In the bushes the first notable mobile tit flock was noted for this autumn - 14 Long-tailed Tits with Chiffchaffs and a few Goldcrests. At least eight Green Sandpipers were at the west end plus four of the many Common Sandpipers that were scattered all round the margins, probably a dozen or so seen. A total of 14 Little Egrets remain scattered around the reservoir, mostly at the dam end. Here an adult and juvenile Herring Gull, five adult Lesser Black-backed Gulls and two adult Common Gulls joined the slowly increasing Black-headed Gull flock. In all five Common Terns were seen plus the juvenile Arctic Tern. It was whilst watching this bird on a distant buoy that I noticed a small wader with some Common Sandpipers. It was a Little Stint which showed a couple of times, however, due to persistent disturbance from as many as five dog walkers that were allowing their dogs in the water, it disappeared and could not be refound. Up to 100 Lapwings now appear to be settled here. Among the lazy Great Crested Grebes were two juvenile Little Grebes and to my amazement a summer Black-necked Grebe. This bird also did a disappearing act, walking both the north and south sides I failed to refind it. The bushes around the reservoir seem to be stacked with young Chiffchaffs, tits and Goldcrests. So with the late morning upon me I made my way back to the west end where four Common Buzzards were seen, one carrying off what looked like a grass snake, also a male Kestrel. A few Stock Doves, Jay and Great Spotted Woodpecker plus the usual Mandarin made for a super selection of species but sadly no Little Stint. |
