| Sighting Description |
Over the last couple of days some nice sightings included several Swifts that are newly arrived and already screaming during a low-level fly past. There are a pair of long staying Common Sandpipers, on occasion they have been displaying on the dam. A pair of Little Ringed Plovers remain as do the two pairs of Common Terns having taken up temporary ownership of the rafts at the west end. The Nuthatches at the west end car park are feeding young now, affording wonderful views of the adults. At the heronry it's beginning to quieten down as a number of the young have flown the nest. Nine Tufted Duck remain and a few male Mandarins are still around looking decidedly lost. House Martins and Swallows are now settled in and collecting mud for their nests. Today I arrived early, as I left the car two Skylarks were singing overhead, the rain having stopped just before dawn tempting them out. The Common Sandpipers were now three, the pair though still engaged in their displaying and the Little Ringed Plovers were mobile today. At 07.00 two Little Terns appeared from the west end, I could hear them, but panic set in as I tried to see them, thankfully I was succesful and watched them disappear to the north. These are the first I've seen here since a pair turned up years ago feeding young. As I turned back to the reservoir a gorgeous adult Little Gull also flew up from the west end and hung around for about 10 minutes before it also headed off north. In the car park at the dam Mistle and Song Thrush were both on song, also up to six Goldcrests and a Firecrest that showed beautifully by the sailing club, still one of my favourites. Lastly here five Jays were causing a din, having a dispute about something or other. At the west end today a single Greenshank was on Whillett's Pool where two Reed Warblers were seen and a Long-tailed Tit was nest building. Nearby seven Stock Doves were feeding together and a Common Buzzard passed over. A lovely day so far. |
